La barrera hemato-encefàlica (BHE) és un dispositiu selectiu que actua de filtre entre la sang circulant i els teixits cerebrals i que impedeix la penetració al cervell de substàncies nocives. Però, el que per una banda resulta beneficiós, ja que evita l’entrada de substàncies perjudicials, es converteix en un obstacle per a l’eficàcia de determinats fàrmacs que exerceixen el seu efecte terapèutic en el cervell.
La BHE va ser el fil conductor de l’onzè simposi internacional organitzat per la Fundació Dr. Antoni Esteve l’octubre de 2004. Al llarg de tres jornades, 19 investigadors de tot el món van presentar els seus treballs sobre aquest dispositiu amb l’objectiu de conèixer més coses sobre ell: les possibles alteracions d’aquesta barrera en condicions patològiques, les modalitats de transport i les noves possibilitats de desenvolupament de nous fàrmacs i nous sistemes de transport amb la finalitat d’afavorir el pas de principis actius a través de la BHE. No és un tema menor si tenim en compte que d’això depèn en bona mesura el desenvolupament de medicaments per al tractament de malalties tan importants com l’Alzheimer, el Parkinson o l’Esclerosi Múltiple.
Albert de Boer, del departament de Farmacologia del Leiden-Amsterdam Center for Drug Research va ser l’encarregat de moderar aquesta reunió científica i d’editar aquest volum número 11 de la sèrie Esteve Foundation Symposia, publicada per Elsevier.
