Els controls anti-dopatge que es realitzen a les grans competicions i la seva repercussió mediàtica han provocat que durant els últims anys es parli molt del mal ús que se’n fa dels fàrmacs a l’esport. Tanmateix, no es discuteix tant del veritable efecte dels medicaments en el rendiment físic ni si realment existeixen evidències sobre tots els efectes possibles sobre l’esport que s’atribueixen als fàrmacs. Sobre les relacions entre l’esport i els medicaments va tractar el simposi internacional organitzat per la Fundació Dr. Antoni Esteve el 1996 i tracta aquest volum número 7 dels Esteve Foundation Symposia. Els seus editors són Thomas Reilly, del Research Institute of sport and exercise sciences de Liverpool, i Michael Ome, del Departament de Farmacologia i Terapèutica de la Universitat de Liverpool.
