In the year 1989, the Esteve Foundation started a new activity: Research Prizes would be awarded biennially to the best work on pharmacological research performed by Spanish authors and published in a scientific journal.

The jury of this first call, formed by Profs. Gerhard Levy (United States), Walter Osswald (Portugal) and Sergio Erill (Spain), decided to award the prize to Drs. Jesús A. García Sevilla and J.K. Zubieta, from the Department of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Basque Country, for their studyActivation and desensitization of presynaptic alpha2-adrenoceptors after inhibition of normal uptake by antidepressant drugs in the rat vas deferens, published in the British Journal of Pharmacology in 1986.

The jury’s opinion was that this was a valuable contribution to the precise knowledge of the action of some antidepressants, revealing an excellent knowledge of the studied problem in addition to its therapeutic implication.
