How to improve scientific writing during the covid era

Publication in scientific journals has grown exponentially with the arrival of covid-19. Possibly never before a specific public health problem caused scientific attention of similar dimensions, all over the world and in such a short time. The need to write articles in the international language of science and, vice versa, the urgency to adapt the terms related to the pandemic to Spanish have forced many professionals to take an accelerated, real-time course on scientific writing.
The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya organized the online session How to improve scientific writing during the covid era, which took take place on July 15, 2021 from 6.30 to 7.30 p.m. The session, in English and Spanish, also served to close the third edition of the Writing for the biomedical sciences course and was be moderated by Salvador Macip, researcher at the Mechanisms of Cancer and Aging Lab at the University of Leicester and head of the UOC.
With the session in English Embracing the challenge of scientific writing, the professor of the course Writing for the biomedical sciences John Giba explained the keys to a correct writing of scientific articles in English. For her part, the medical corrector Paz Gómez Polledo provided in her session some tips to write well in Spanish about the covid. After the two sessions, it was time for debate and questions.
Salvador Macip
Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona. He is an expert on the molecular bases of cancer and aging, which he researches at the Mechanisms of Cancer and Aging lab (lab.macip.org), the laboratory he directs at the University of Leicester. He has been a professor and researcher at the UOC since 2020. He is also dedicated to scientific dissemination, with a dozen published books and numerous articles in various media.
John giba
Born in the USA and graduated in psychology (University of Pittsburgh, 1984), he has taught English in Spain since 1985. Currently, his activity is mainly focused on helping scientists and health professionals prepare scientific manuscripts for international journals and oral communications. for congresses. He has given lectures and workshops in various courses on Biomedical English. He has designed and taught a module in scientific English for various Master’s programs at the faculties of medicine of the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is the co-author of three books on scientific communication: Surgical English (2010), Inglés Médico y Sanitario (2010), i Preparing and Delivering Scientific Presentations (2011). His fourth book Developing Skills in Scientific Writing is available for free through the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation.
Paz Gómez Polledo
Doctor in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid and a diploma in Business Medicine from the National School of Occupational Medicine. She has practiced medicine as a surgeon, forensic doctor and company doctor. She has been a freelance medical translator from English to Spanish for 35 years, as well as a proofreader and editor of medical and pharmaceutical texts in Spanish. She teaches two online courses on medical and pharmaceutical translation. She has given conferences and seminars on biosanitary translation and participated in the master’s degree in “Specialized Translation (EN / FR / DE_ES)” at IDEP at the University of Córdoba. She writes about medical terminology on her blog “Medical Translation and the AEMPS.” She is the author of the “Coronaglossary”, the first English-Spanish glossary on coronavirus and covid-19 published on the internet and co-author of the “Dictionary of covid-19 (EN-ES)”. She is a co-founding partner of Medtrad, Asetrad, UniCo and Tremédica and a member of the European (EMWA) and Spanish (AERTeM) medical writers associations. She is on the editorial board of Panace @: Journal of Medicine, Language and Translation.
