The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation participates in the exhibition La ciencia según Forges (Science according to Forges), carried out in collaboration with the CSIC and the Quevedo Institute for the Arts of Humor. This exhibition includes the scientific vision of this graphic humorist through its vignettes. Is also a journey through the past, the present and the future of research, with the aim of being a window to dissemination, curiosity and a better public knowledge of what is offered from science and research.
After staying in Madrid and Barcelona, where it has remained in the central building of the CSIC from November 5, 2019 to January 31, 2020 and at the Residència d’Investigadors from February 11 to March 1, 2020, the exhibition now continues in Seville. The opening took place on March 19, 2020 at the Casa de la Ciencia Museum in Seville, where it will remain until May 3. The inauguration featured the parliaments of Margarita Paneque, institutional delegate of the CSIC in Andalusia and Extremadura; Fernando del Blanco, curator of the Exhibition; Berta Fraguas, daughter of Forges; and Manuel González, astrophysicist and scientific disseminator at the Andalusian Institute of Astrophysics.
Antonio Fraguas de Pablo ‘Forges’ (1942-2018) is one of the most accurate graphic chroniclers of Spain in the last 50 years. His drawings and cartoons related to science constitute an exciting and by no means minor section of his activity in the press. From his daily platform he portrayed multiple facets of scientific research: he imagined unusual scenarios and situations, he approached its protagonists from cheeky prisms, he carefully observed the vertiginous advancement of technology, he sharply portrayed the challenges that he had to face and he denounced recurrently the abandonment traditionally suffered by Spanish organizations dedicated to generating knowledge.
The exhibition offers a tour of the cartoons that Forges dedicated to science and the scientific community through eight sections, ranging from the discoveries, theories and principles that have changed humanity to the difficulties of investigating in our country, passing through the applications of science that have changed our lives. “Under many of the cartoons – in the form of a QR code – await some of the challenges that humankind has thrown at the complexity of nature, its dreams of knowledge, its aspirations to transcend limits, the modest will to reach lives better for everyone ”, concludes Fernando del Blanco, curator of the exhibition Science according to Forges.
Science according to Forges began its journey on November 5, 2019 in the central building of the CSIC and had the parliaments of Rosa Menéndez López, President of the CSIC; Fernando del Blanco, curator of the exhibition with Gregorio Valencia; Pilar Garrido, representative of the Forges family; María Sanz, deputy director of the Fundación General CSIC; and Fèlix Bosch, Director of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation.
Next, the exhibition Science according to Forges ended at the Residència d’Investigadors de Barcelona, from February 11 to March 1, 2020. The inauguration was attended by the parliaments of Lluís Calvo, CSIC delegate in Catalonia, Fernando del Blanco, exhibition curator, and Fèlix Bosch, director of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation.
