The news of the last year has been very marked by the context of pandemic and climate crisis. While this has made the journalistic agenda highlight the importance of science, it has also paved the way for intoxication and fake news . Citizens have received a great deal of information on such critical issues as health and the environment, how to discern when it is trustworthy?
The fifth edition of the PerCientEx Observatory, in collaboration with the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation and “la Caixa” Foundation, will be held on June 2 at 10 am to 12 noon in person at Cosmocaixa (Barcelona) . In order to provide an answer, PerCientEx compiles good practices and analyzes the criteria that define the excellence of science journalism in Latin America and contribute to critical thinking. We will discover through three practical cases of extraordinary reports and their authors. The authors of this work will be interviewed by journalists and experts with extensive experience in the sector to explain how the production process of these articles has been, as well as challenges and opportunities to ensure the quality of journalism.
This year’s program will feature the following guests. Will you miss it?
- In the science category , Pampa Garcia Molina ( @pampanilla ) will talk to Patricia Fernández de Lis ( @pflis ) about the report ‘The year of science’ (El País), one of the works awarded by the Casa de les Ciencias Prisms in Disclosure.
- In the field of health , Jesús Méndez ( @jesusmendezzz ) will talk to Lara Bonilla ( @larabonilla ) about the work ‘Infertility. The Other Side of Motherhood ‘(Daily ALTAR), nominated for the European Press Prize.
- Regarding the environment , Andrea Arnal ( @AndreaArnal ) will discuss with Marcos Valverde ( @MarcosDavidV ) about the report ‘Mercury. A Footprint in the Jungle ‘(InfoAmazonia, Venezuela), a multimedia work funded through the prestigious Pulitzer Center and Rainforest Journalism Fund grants.
The initiative will be presented as a day open to the general public and especially aimed at journalists, disseminators, students and other curious people who show interest in quality journalism or in each of the topics covered.
What is the PerCientEx Observatory?
The PerCientEx Observatory of Science Journalism, a project in collaboration with the “la Caixa” Foundation and the Dr. Antoni Esteve and promoted by the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), aims to collect examples of quality journalism in print and digital journalism in Latin America. The initiative follows the line of the PerCientEx Project: Excellence and Innovation in Science Journalism in Spain, also promoted by the ACCC in collaboration with the “la Caixa” Foundation, which aimed to detect and disseminate examples of good science, technology, health and environmental journalism practices published in the digital press in Spain.
