Although cancer is a priority in scientific forums and meetings, the issue has rarely been addressed from the perspective of one of the groups most involved in cancer patient care, nurses. This new monograph by the Esteve Foundation reflects the experience of different health professionals in the treatment of cancer patient, focusing primarily on the crucial role of nurses.
Coordinated by Rosa Maria Torrens, a former teacher and director of the School of Nursing at Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, the publication is the result of a Round Table organized in November 2009 that brought together professionals and experts in medicine, psychology, bioethics, physiotherapy and nursing. Its purpose was to discuss how to deal with clinical problems and patient needs, consistent with cancer and its treatment, from the perspective of nursing.
The monograph begins with the treatment of two of the two most prevalent cancers that have the greatest impact on our environment, breast and lung cancer, to examine approaches to care during chemotherapy, pain, malnutrition, rehabilitation after axillary dissection, bioethical dilemmas and palliative care. In particular, to analyze how nurses carry out their role, as they assist in healing and help people to achieve a better quality of life and comfort.
