Although this tool is practically unknown in our country, comic has been used for years overseas, as a teaching resource in Medical studies. Prestigious centres like Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, in the United States, have not only used it for a long time in their medical schools, but even organize international congresses on comic. Therefore, the expert in communication and health education, Blanca Mayor Serrano is presenting the book El cómic como recurso didáctico en los estudios de Medicina. This is a manual published by the Esteve Foundation, that seeks to implement cartoons as a teaching method in medical schools of Spanish universities.
Well-known publications such as the scientific journal JAMA, have insisted in recent years on the interest in using comics to facilitate learning and patient attention. A review in 2010 published in the British Medical Journal by Green and Myers provided some examples of its use to give information on diseases such as cancer and on their application in teaching health science to students.
In spite of the initial mistrust of some doctors and patients, who considered comic to be a childish, trivial or simplistic tool, their use in medical schools has proved that it is effective. Various surveys carried out after long experience on medical students have proved that the use of comic as a teaching tool, improves important skills in students for the medical profession. These include empathy, communication, clinical reasoning, writing, attention to aspects of body language and the awareness of medical bias.
, Blanca Mayor Serrano therefore presents in this new publication, three teaching units of real cartoons in full colour, ready to be used in the lecture room, so that the lecturer does not have to search for materials or prepare activities to design a teaching class. The reader also has a work bench that can be used to draw up future activities applicable to areas other than medicine.
El cómic como recurso didáctico en los estudios de Medicina is addressed both to instructors starting in teaching communication skills and those with experience in teaching this for some time but wish to incorporate new teaching materials or a new approach in their classes. It is also of interest to students or residents who are seeking a way to complement learning.
The book will be presented on 25 July 2016 at the opening of the course by Fernando A. Navarro Problems, methods and the latest issues in medical translation of Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo.
