Fifteen years of work, 200 pages, seven subject areas, almost 900 terms, 150 of of them standardized in Catalan. These are some of the figures concerning the Diccionari de recerca clínica de medicaments (Dictionary of clinical medicine research), the work tool for clinical research experts, which was presented in Barcelona on 18 December 2014. The presentation was chaired by Ester Franquesa, managing director of Linguistic Policy of the Catalan Regional Government, and Roser Vallès, managing director of Health Organization and Regulations.
Over 140 people went to the Palau Moja, in the heart of the Barcelona Ramblas, to attend the presentation. This reference book is “essential for a pioneer country of research”, stated Fèlix Bosch, director of the Esteve Foundation and co-author of the dictionary, together withJosep-Eladi Baños, professor of pharmacology of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and Albert Cobos, of the department of public health of Universitat de Barcelona.
Published by the Esteve Foundation and Termcat, the director of this terminology centre, Jordi Bover, presented the technical features of the dictionary. It not only seeks to solve the terminology doubts of clinical medicine research experts, but it is also very useful for linguistic mediators, such as journalists, translators and proofreaders of specialized texts, and all readers interested in this border and multidisciplinary scope of knowledge.
The presentation also included the paper Investigación clínica, ¿cabe lengua fuera del inglés? (Medical research, is there room for a language other than English?), by Fernando A. Navarro, in which the expert in medical language convinced the most sceptic on the need to work on improving language. “The standardization of scientific terms is still a subject that needs to be addressed by Spanish people, something that the English do spontaneously”, stated Navarro. He went on to praise the work carried out in this sense by a terminology centre such as Termcat. The author of the Diccionario de dudas y dificultades de traducción del inglés médico (Dictionary of doubts and difficulties in translating medical English) ended by saying “our language forms part of our culture and therefore our science”.
El Diccionari de recerca clínica de medicaments is available in three different formats. You can consult it online through Termcat, download it in PDF below, or ask for a printed version by clicking on ‘Request publication’.
