The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a selective device that acts as a filter between circulating blood and brain tissues, in order to prevent the penetration of harmful substances into the brain. However, this benefit of preventing the entry of harmful substances becomes an obstacle to the efficacy of certain drugs that exert their therapeutic effect in the brain. BBB was the conducting thread of the eleventh international symposium organized by the Esteve Foundation in October 2004.
During three days, 19 investigators around the world presented their works for a better knowledge of this device: possible BBB alterations in pathologic conditions, transport modalities and new possibilities of developing new drugs and new transport modalities in order to favor the penetration of active substances through BBB. This is no small matter considering its crucial importance in the development of medicinal products for the treatment of major diseases such as Alzheimer, Parkinson or Multiple Sclerosis.
Albert de Boer, from the Department of Pharmacology of the Leiden-Amsterdam Center for Drug Research, moderated this scientific meeting and edited this volume number 11 of the Esteve Foundation Symposia series, published by Elsevier Science.
