This document is a final report collecting all questions, proposals and conclusions raised in the meeting Publish or Perish? The Challenges in Biomedical Publishing held on September 21 and 22 in Maó (Minorca) within the scope of the XV Summer School of Public Health.
The aim of this meeting was to discuss the most relevant, up-to-date aspects of scientific publishing. For that purpose, seven different personalities related to the field submitted their works. Their contributions and further discussions gave rise to interesting proposals for improvement in matters related to journalists, peer-reviewers or free access to scientific publications.
Alex Williamson, from the British Medical Journal Group, was the first submitter, followed by Gonzalo Casino, from the Health Section of El País, Miquel Porta, from the IMIM and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Miquel Vilardell, from Medicina Clínica, Josep-Lluís Segú, from Ediciones Doyma, Ana M. García, from Gaceta Sanitaria, and Carlos Álvarez-Dardet, from the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. The workshop was coordinated by Esteve Fernández, Director of Gaceta Sanitaria and researcher of the Institut Català d’Oncologia.
