The problems and lacks encountered daily by professional researchers are many. Accordingly, convincing the new generations of physicians to combine healthcare activities with research duties seems to be no easy task. However, the Esteve Foundation organized a round table in July 2004 where physicians with years of combining basic research and clinical practice were to share their experience with newcomers.
The “veterans” presented their most relevant studies in heterogeneous fields like cardiology, colorectal cancer, ophthalmology or hematology. Their excellent results were the most palpable evidence of the usefulness of research. The “beginners”, for their part, had the opportunity of seeing the two faces of the same coin: head –the evidence of the quality of results–, and tail –the efforts and sacrifices endured by the investigating doctor in a task not sufficiently acknowledged by society.
Apart from presenting results of specific projects as an example of research in a healthcare environment, this monograph also includes serious reflections arisen in the round table regarding political, economical and social issues in our country. This compilation of eleven submissions was edited by Sebastià Videla, from the Fundació Institut de Recerca of the Universitary General Hospital Vall d’Hebron de Barcelona, and by Félix Bosch, from the Esteve Foundation.
