In our country, philanthropy is taking on more importance in the field of research, similarly to our environment, where it is the first beneficiary of donations, maintaining strong growth.

In countries such as France and Italy, philanthropy represents between 2 and 3% of total income of research, with 600 and 930 M€. In the United Kingdom, it represents 5% with 1,560 M€ In Spain, it only represents 0.6% of research income, around 85 m€ a year, for the moment, according to data from 2015.

However, this situation is quickly changing, and we are constantly seeing examples about strategies to raise more funds for research. The Esteve Foundation and Fundación Bancaria “la Caixa” present the book, Philanthropy in research and innovation in biosciences. The book includes some strategies and communication and philanthropy experiences of various European biomedical research centres, like Cancer Research UK, the Curie Institute and the Karolinska Institutet. The book emerged from a previous seminar held at CosmoCaixa in Barcelona.

The presentation took place on 8 May 2017 at the Palau Macaya of Barcelona. Participants included Jordi Portabella, director of the Research and Knowledge Department of Fundación Bancaria ”la Caixa”, and Fèlix Bosch, director of the Esteve Foundation, along with the two coordinators of this publication, Ricard Valls, director of Zohar, and Joan Bigorra, director of Innovation of the Instituto de Salud Global of Barcelona (ISGlobal).

All attendants received a copy of the Notebook by the Esteve Foundation, Philanthropy in research and innovation in biosciences, which can also be requested or downloaded free of charge from our website.
