La contribución del Dr. Louis Lasagna al impulso de la farmacología clínica es indiscutible. Licenciado en la Rutgers University en 1943 y doctorado cuatro años después en la Columbia University, revolucionó como nadie el mundo de los medicamentos. Desde mediados de la década de los 50, investigó la influencia del efecto placebo en la eficacia de los fármacos a través de los ensayos clínicos. Se interesó especialmente por la analgesia, la eutanasia, la hipnosis y la problemática de la investigación y el desarrollo de nuevos medicamentos. A su vez, también determinó la necesidad de los aspectos éticos y de regulación en la investigación clínica.
Por todas sus contribuciones al campo de la farmacología clínica, resulta justificado que el primer volumen de la serie Pharmacotherapy Revisited, editada por la Fundación Dr. Antonio Esteve, esté enteramente dedicado al Dr. Louis Lasagna. Sergio Erill, director de la Fundación, es el encargado de recopilar aquellos artículos, a su juicio, más destacados del Dr. Lasagna (publicados entre 1954 y 1987) y que resultan indispensables para el progreso de la farmacología clínica. Finalmente son 26 los artículos seleccionados en este libro, que los recupera tal y como se publicaron en su día, en edición facsímile.
