The Esteve Foundation has participated in the translation of a series of teaching resources for primary education, prepared by the Informed Health Choices project. Its aim is to train people to assess statements on treatments and to make informed decisions on health. To do this, different educational material was developed for children aged 10 to 12, which included the Book of health decisions, the Teachers guidebook, a Book of exercises, Activity sheets and a Poster.
These teaching materials are aimed at teaching twelve key concepts that people need to understand and apply, in order to assess statements on treatments and to make informed decisions on health. Recognizing statements on the effects of treatments with unreliable reasoning, understanding if comparisons between treatments are fair and reliable, or making informed decisions on treatments, are some of the aspects included in these resources for primary education.
The Book of health decisions includes a story told in comic format (which presents and explains twelve key concepts), activities for the classroom, exercises, a list of key messages and a glossary. The Teachers Guidebook includes various resources to assist teachers to use the Book on health decisions.
The original versions in English, form part of a clinical trial in Uganda, where 120 schools were selected at random (approximately 10,000 students), to receive the action with resources. The schoolchildren who used these teaching materials, had greater capacity to assess statements on treatments (by applying the twelve key concepts), compared to children from the control schools. The results of the study were published in 2017 in The Lancet journal.
