How to develop a research project in health sciences – Next edition: Elche, November, 17-18 2022

A research project is a structured procedure which follows a scientific method to specify what the goals are, who does the research, and how goals are intended to be reached. Whoever undertakes to write a project, for the purpose of obtaining funds for research, should have or should acquire skills related to bibliographic revision and precise justification of the need to generate knowledge regarding a problem. He/she should also know how to outline a innovative and attractive hypothesis, correctly formulate targets, select the correct method and search for the appropriate research team, draw up a realistic work plan regarding the available means and resources, and estimate the exact cost to be applied for in order to reach the aim of the research.

Presenting the different sections systematically to draw up a research project, and applying for their funding from the main financial agencies in order to carry out the project, can also be a great help to those starting out as researchers.

The Dr. Antoni Esteve course How to develop a research project in health sciences aims to disseminate the basic techniques and skills to write and apply for research projects in health sciences from national funding agencies and other institutions.

• What is and what isn’t research. Funding agencies and the selection of funding resources. Who to ask for funding? Type of projects
• Drawing up of hypotheses and formulation of objectives
• The scientific justification of the research project: Writing the section on the background and the presentation of the current status of scientific-technical knowledge

• Work plan and schedule
• Available means and detailed justification of the budget requested
• Applicability and dissemination plan: Relevance of the project as regards its clinical, healthcare and/or technological development impact. Relevance of the project regarding its bibliometric impact

PROFESSORS

Carlos Álvarez Dardet-Díaz
Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and director of the Doctorate programme of Health Sciences at Universidad de Alicante. Associate editor of Gaceta Sanitaria. Author of a number of articles in JCR journals. His line of research is focused on the promotion of health and political epidemiology. He has evaluated projects for the Health Research Fund, the South African Research Council and the BBVA Foundation. He was member of the Biomedicine Commission of the National Evaluation Commission of Research Activity. He was editor (1998-2008) of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Elena Ronda Pérez

Lecturer of Preventive Medicine and Public Health of Universidad de Alicante. Specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Her teaching and research activities are based mainly on the area of occupational health. She has collaborated and directed a number of research projects, funded by public and private agencies. She has also published a range of articles in national and international journals. She has worked as a proofreader for scientific journals and Project Evaluation Agencies. She collaborates with the National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective Studies in calls of the Health Research Fund.

Blanca Lumbreras Lacarra
Lecturer of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Universidad Miguel Hernández. Doctor in Public Health from this University, and MSc in Modern Epidemiology from Imperial College of London. She specializes in Clinical Analysis. Her main lines of research are focused on the study of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, and particularly, on Clinical Epidemiology studies. Precisely in the study of suitability of diagnostic tests, she has directed three doctorate thesis. She has collaborated in a wide range of research projects, and is the main researcher of the majority of them. She has published a range of scientfic articles. She is member of CIBER in Epidemiology and Public Health. She is proofreader for national and international journas, and of national and regional projects. She is assistant of the area of epidemiology of the National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective Studies.

Teresa Ruiz Cantero
Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and currently Vice-Dean of Research, Postgraduate/Doctorate studies and International Relations of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Universidad de Alicante. She has directed and participated in national and international quantative and qualitative methodology projects, related to health from the gender perspective, and political epidemiology, from where her scientific production in Spanish and international journals comes from. She is Member of the Technical Commission of R&D&I Projects Evaluation,  Area of Public Health, Epidemiology and Public Health. Instituto de Salud Carlos IIII. Evaluator of research projects in public calls of Evaluation Agencies of various Regional Autoomies, and Professional University Training Grants. Area of Clinical Medicine and Epidemiology. Ministry of Education. She has also participated in the Health Science Commission for the Evaluation of Official Degrees in the Evaluation Agency of Andalucia.

GENERAL INFORMATIONS
• These courses are addressed to researchers with little experience in writing research projects in health sciences, who are taking training programmes (doctorate, specialization or post-graduate courses in general) and who belong to or are about to join an active research group.
• The course involves a participative approach by attendants, with technical-practical explanations by professors, and through various exercises based on research projects that already been financed.
• The course lasts for 16 hours in an intensive format.
• The enrolment fee is 100€.  Accommodation and travelling expenses should be settled by participants.
• The number of external participants is limited to a maximum of 5 places.
• If for reasons beyond the control of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation, the times or dates of this training seminar have to be modified, or it is decided to cancel it, this institution will not be held responsible for any expenses the participant may have incurred relating to the course (transport, accommodation or others).
• A certificate of attendance will be given to each participant.
