Published in the journal Gaceta Sanitaria, this article summarizes the reflections on the topic Edit or Perish? The challenges in biomedical edition, organized by the Esteve Foundation in the framework of the 15th edition of the Summer School of Public Health, held in the city of Maó (Minorca) in September 2004.
This meeting was focused on debating a selection of current topics of interest regarding different aspects of scientific edition. In addition to the views of several editors of scientific journals, also included were those of other agents directly or indirectly involved in edition, such as peer-reviewers, authors and journalists. Seven lectures were given in this two-day meeting, the first by Alex Williamson, from the British Medical Journal Group, with further discussion among its 28 attendants. The summary of contents and proposals is also gathered in a report issued by the Foundation after the meeting.
The most accepted proposal was to foster the organization of this type of joint sessions between journalists, researchers and responsibles of scientific journals around common interest topics, in order to facilitate communication among them and improve the activity of each.
