“Sceptics are people who, far from accepting everything they are told, have doubts. They analyse data assessing how they were obtained, they seek counterexamples, revise efficacy, examine compatibility with other generally established principles and the consequences of their application. They do not accept the principle of authority or tradition, but the principle of proof”. This is how the medical director of IntraMed, Daniel Flichtentrei, from Argentina, describes the work of the scientific journalist, Gonzalo Casino, author of over 600 articles published over the last fifteen years in the Escepticemia blog.
Now, a new Notebook from the Esteve Foundation compiles a selection of the 99 most outstanding articles of the history of Escepticemia. This is the blog that Gonzalo Casino has used to pinpoint the latest news on health and medicine, with his own particular critical eye. Grouped in 10 chapters, the articles tackle a variety of subjects that are apparently unconnected, such as neuroscience, journalism, science and art, statistics or language. The common thread, according to the author, is scepticism, always with health and medicine in the background.
Throughout this selection, Casino expresses his point of view as a journalist specialized in science and medicine, but also interested in information flows and forms of knowledge, mainly science and also art. ?The intention of this book is to compose a mosaic with a range of pieces, that has to be incomplete, on health and information, two of the idols of our contemporary society”, summarizes the author.
Gonzalo Casino will present the book Escepticemia. Una mirada escéptica sobre la salud y la información (Escepticemia. A sceptic look at health and information) on 25 November 2015 at 7.30 pm at Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc in Barcelona (C/ Mercaders, 42). The presentation will also be attended by Daniel Flichtentrei, medical director of IntraMed, the first portal for doctors of Latin America, and who wrote the prologue to this new publication.
