L’any 1961, el metge australià WG McBride va escriure una carta a The Lancet amb el títol Talidomida i anomalies congènites. En aquest escrit advertia de la possible relació entre diferents casos de malformacions en bebès i el consum d’aquesta substància, molt comú per a tractar nàusees i vòmits durant els primers mesos de l’embaràs. Avui sabem que més de 10.000 nens de tot el món van néixer amb serioses deformacions a les cames i als braços a causa d’aquest medicament.
La tragèdia de la talidomida va canviar de manera rotunda la manera com els fàrmacs es desenvolupen, es proven i es regulen. Als Estats Units, per exemple, es va ampliar l’autoritat de la Food and Drug Administration i a molts països va haver-hi un enduriment molt important de les proves per les quals havien de passar els medicaments abans de comercialitzar-se.
Aquesta carta que McBride va enviar a The Lancet és el primer dels 27 articles que conté aquesta publicació de la Fundació Dr. Antoni Esteve i que formen part de la columna vertebral de la Farmacoepidemiologia. Aquesta disciplina s’encarrega d’estudiar els efectes beneficiosos o perjudicials i de l’ús dels medicaments en poblacions humanes, fent ús dels mètodes i el raonament epidemiològics. Com a àmbit d’estudi definit, va néixer a mitjans dels vuitanta, consolidant-se el 1989 amb la creació de la Societat Internacional de Farmacoepidemiologia. Aquesta institució agrupa a especialistes d’universitats i hospitals, així com també d’agències del medicament, autoritats sanitàries i companyies de la indústria biomèdica.
Susana Pérez Gutthann va ser presidenta d’aquesta societat internacional. Ella ha estat l’encarregada de seleccionar, juntament amb alguns dels seus col•legues epidemiòlegs, els articles que, al seu parer, han donat forma a la Farmacoepidemiologia. Aquest volum número sis de la sèrie Pharmacotherapy Revisited recull, doncs, en edició facsímil, tal com es varen publicar en el seu moment, alguns dels articles més representatius d’aquesta disciplina.
