La contribució del Dr. Louis Lasagna a l’impuls de la farmacologia clínica és indiscutible. Llicenciat a la Rutgers University el 1943 i doctorat quatre anys més tard a la Columbia University, va revolucionar com ningú el món dels medicaments. Des de mitjans de la dècada dels 50, va investigar la influència de l’efecte placebo en l’eficàcia dels fàrmacs a través dels assaigs clínics. S’interessà especialment per l’analgèsia, la hipnosi, l’eutanàsia i la problemàtica de la investigació i el desenvolupament de nous medicaments. També va determinar la necessitat dels aspectes ètics i de regulació en la investigació clínica.
Per totes les seves contribucions al camp de la farmacologia clínica, resulta molt justificat que el primer volum de la sèrie Pharmacotherapy Revisited, editada per la Fundació Dr. Antoni Esteve, estigui dedicat sencerament al Dr. Louis Lasagna. Sergi Erill, director de la Fundació, és l’encarregat de recopilar aquells articles que, al seu parer, són els més destacats del Dr. Lasagna (publicats entre 1954 i 1987) i que resulten indispensables per al progrés de la farmacologia clínica. Finalment són 26 els articles seleccionats en aquest llibre, que els recupera tal i com es van publicar en el seu moment, en edició facsímil.
