Catalonia has researchers and biomedical research centers that are world-renowned. They lead research projects ranging from laboratory work to clinical applicability to meet the needs of patients. That is why some of the greatest representatives of Catalan biomedical research mett on May 4, 2022 from 5 to 7 pm in an event organized by the Dr. Antoni Esteve at the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia to commemorate the 250th anniversary of this historic institution.
A representation of the most advanced biomedical research centers was present at the event Catalonia at the forefront of biomedicine: from genomics to gene and cell therapy, which featured the presentations of five of its top scientific leaders. The session was moderated by Luis Serrano, scientific director of the Center for Genomic Regulation, and Jordi Sierra, director of the Hematology Service at Santa Creu and Santa Pau Hospital, together with Josep Antoni. Bombí, president of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia.
The scientific conference reviewed the past, present and future of Catalan biomedicine, focusing on one of the most promising fields for the treatment of diseases: gene and cell therapy. That is why those in charge of different lines of research studying ways to repair, regulate, add or remove gene sequences presented their latest advances in treating, curing or preventing disease.
The day was opened by Roderic Guigó, coordinator of the Bioinformatics Program at the Center for Genomic Regulation and professor at Pompeu Fabra University, analyzing the impact of post-genomic projects on health sciences. Next, cancer stem cells were addressed by Anna Bigas, head of the stem cell and cancer group at the Hospital del Mar Institute for Medical Research and Deputy Director of Preclinical Research at the Institute. against Leukemia Josep Carreras.
The third session focused on diseases that affect the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes. Elias Campo, Director of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), a professor at the UB and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, explained some of the most advanced molecular diagnostic techniques, such as agarose gel electrophoresis or genomic sequencing of individualized cells.
For his part, Agustí Barnadas, head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital de la Santa Creu y Sant Pau and professor at the UAB, focused on tumor immunotherapy, the type of cancer treatment that stimulates the body’s natural defenses to fight this disease and encompassing techniques such as monoclonal antibodies or cell therapy. Finally, it was the turn of Fàtima Bosch, director of the Center for Animal Biotechnology and Gene Therapy and professor at the UAB, who will list the advantages of gene therapy in clinical practice.
At the end of the scientific sessions, science journalist Michele Catanzaro moderated a final session with all the participants to extract the benefits and will bring these medical advances for the sick and for society.
